Seeing the Land

Sometimes I think it would be easier to prepare for heaven if we had more concrete descriptions of what life will be like there. How will we spend our time? Can we see what our loved ones on earth are doing? Do pets go to heaven?

Thinking in those terms makes me appreciate more what Abraham’s faith looked like. God told him to pack up and go to “A land I will show you.” Yes, he told him it would be bountiful, but my guess is that Abraham had little context for what it would really be like. And the idea of his descendants inheriting the land—that must have seemed quite a stretch to someone who didn’t have the land, much less any descendants!

That’s why God calls us friends when we act in faith. Obeying when we don’t know the outcome, when we haven’t been shown “the goods,” requires a trust that delights God’s heart.

God promised a good outcome. That was enough for Abraham. Is it enough for me?
