The same table

I like to change up my table center pieces with the seasons. I LOVE having candles and greenery in the winter. Changing things keeps things feeling clean and fresh.

I start my day the same way every day, with a not quite boiling cup of chamomile tea. Without that scent, the day doesn't feel like it has begun.

What about you? Are you more drawn to a change of scenery or the comfort of the familiar?

My time at the Lord's table in study and prayer is both new and exciting AND constant and comforting.  Some days I approach the table with the familiar cup of camomile tea longing for the constant and unchanging. Other days, sitting at the same table, I notice fresh arrangements, new linens, and unexpected twists and turns in thought and prayer.

It's the same table. And yet no interaction with the living God leaves you feeling the same. What about you? Does your time at the table need to grow in consistency, routine, and habit? Or do your moments with God need a fresh perspective and a new outlook?

As we begin a new year, let's recall the invitation of our Savior to sit with Him at His table. Let's accept that invitation, to the moments that feel like a warm cup of tea and to the moments that feel like a brand new table setting. The same table and the same God, but never the same again.
